Guard falls shy on November recruiting goals

The Army National Guard failed to meet its recruiting goal for November, but the active Army and Army Reserve each exceeded their goals, the Defense Department announced Monday.

The Guard recruited 3,335 new soldiers, 77 percent of its goal of 4,322.

Officials said the Guard slowed its recruiting efforts because it is projected to come in over its budgeted end-strength. The Guard ended fiscal 2009 with 358,391 soldiers, slightly more than its authorized end-strength of 358,200.

Plans call for the Guard to recruit 60,000 new soldiers this fiscal year, which began Oct. 1.

Also in November, the active Army reported 7,063 new soldiers, 103 percent of its goal of 6,858. The active Army plans to recruit 74,500 new soldiers this fiscal year.
