The Navy’s newest destroyer arrived today at its new homeport of San Diego.

The Dewey conducted training and readiness drills on its way from the Northrop Grumman Shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., according to the Navy. The ship also made a port visit to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where crew members did community service projects.

“As much as we enjoyed the hospitality and friendship of our shipbuilding team on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we are looking forward to finally arriving home to our families in San Diego,” Dewey’s Commanding Officer Cmdr. Warren R. Buller said in a statement. “Dewey is a well-built ship with an exceptional crew, ready now to join our sister ships in the Pacific Fleet.”

Dewey was christened Jan. 26, 2008, by the ship’s sponsor Deborah Mullen, wife of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen. Dewey is the 55th ship in the Arleigh Burke class of destroyers. It is also the third Navy ship named after Adm. George Dewey, hero of the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

Dewey’s commissioning is scheduled for March 6 at Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station.
