Jackson soldier with meningitis returns home

FORT JACKSON, S.C. — Officials at Fort Jackson say a soldier diagnosed with meningitis has been released from the hospital and there have been no other cases of the disease reported on base.

Fort Jackson’s deputy commanding officer, Col. Kevin Shwedo, said the soldier’s unit and hospital employees reacted promptly, which helped keep other soldiers from being infected.

Officials say the soldier, whose name was not released, has returned to her training unit and should recover.

Meningitis is an infection in the fluid that surrounds the brain and is in the spinal cord.
