Deployments removed from promotion briefs

The Air Force is removing deployment history data from some promotion documents for officers and senior noncommissioned officers in an effort to place nontraditional deployments and other contributions on equal footing with traditional war-zone deployments, Air Force officials announced in February.

Deployment dates will be removed from officer selection briefs, duty qualification briefs for officers and senior NCO evaluation briefs.

However, detailed deployment data will still be included in performance reports, decoration citations and officer promotion recommendation forms.

The change was necessary because many short deployments and other war-related assignments were being missed under the previous system, said Lt. Col. John Giles, chief of promotions and evaluations for the Air Staff.

This “ensures all airmen are considered fairly with regard to deployment contributions,” Giles said. “More accurate and detailed deployment data is contained elsewhere in the record, and ... we want to make sure are not focusing on a potentially incomplete piece of data.”
