One month after the hitting the fleet, the Navy’s new blue camouflage uniform is now on deployment.

Two ships from the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group — the carrier itself and the attack submarine Scranton — put to sea Feb. 20 and 21 with sailors wearing the Navy Working Uniform.

“We had wanted to completely man the rails in NWU,” Command Master Chief (SW/AW) Bryan Exum, Ike’s senior enlisted sailor, said in a telephone interview. “But when we polled the crew, we found that just under a third actually had it, making difficult to man the entire perimeter of the ship with that uniform alone.”

The result likely caused more than a few double takes. Rather than the standard line of sailors in dress uniforms, Ike pulled out of Norfolk, Va., with one NWU for every two dress blue uniforms.

Exum said he’s gotten good feedback from sailors as to the uniform’s comfort.
