CHARLESTON, S.C. — The shrill of bagpipes, dozens of flags and the mournful echo of “Taps” are part of the pageantry during the annual Massing of the Colors this weekend at The Citadel in Charleston.

Sunday afternoon’s event at the military school’s Summerall Chapel is sponsored by the General Westmoreland Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars — a nonpartisan patriotic organization established 90 years ago.

Organizers say the ceremony is to rededicate faith in the nation’s colors.

Color guards from 35 military, veterans, civic and patriotic organizations are taking part.

The event will close with a memorial service after which buglers will echo “Taps” in the sanctuary.
