FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — A Fort Campbell officer has been found guilty of murder in the death of an Iraqi detainee.

A military jury also found 1st Lt. Michael Behenna of Edmond, Okla., guilty Friday night of assault but acquitted him of making a false statement.

Prosecutors argued in closing statements Friday that Behenna intended to kill the detainee in a secluded railroad culvert near Beiji, Iraq, last May. He had been charged with premeditated murder, but the jury found him guilty of the lesser offense.

Behenna testified earlier this week that he shot Ali Mansour Mohammed in self-defense and that he didn’t intend to kill him.
