Military retired and Social Security
A caller into C-Span this morning claimed his twenty years of service as a benefit he EARNED (Which of course he did). His argument however was or seemed to be against Social Security as if he were not entitled to Social Security.

Military people since 1957 pay into SS so they are entitled. Isn't this general knowledge of those in service today?

Its really hard to miss.

3. Yes.
I think the caller I refer to was not Military at all or he would have realized that military are SS entitled.

I was in service six years before 57 and even though we did not pay SS we are treated as if we did.

All part of the lies drifting around re-SS.

2. Reduced??
Isn't the military pension reduced when the person becomes eligible for social security?

4. Welcome MS Liberal
There have been efforts bandied about to have a military pension be "offset" when the member becomes eligible for social security but so far it has been unsuccessful. I hang out in Pearl River County. Nice to have you aboard.

6. Nope, not as far as I know.
Military retirement is a non-contributory retirement plan and it pays out as a certain percentage of a standing base pay calculated at retirement. It ranges anywhere from 50-75% depending on how long the person stays in.

As far as I know, the amount received unchangeable.

8. Well, you can draw Social Security, but
if you're disabled, the amount of your disability payment (from the VA) is deducted from your retirement check.
