Maine Guard Contingent Gets Big Sendoff

BANGOR, Maine — Maine’s top political leaders joined friends and relatives in a ceremonial send-off in Bangor for members of a Maine Army National Guard unit that will soon be headed to Afghanistan.

The troops from the 286th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion will undergo a few weeks of specialized training at Fort Hood, Texas, before heading overseas for the yearlong deployment.

The battalion commander, Lt. Col. Diane Dunn, said the unit will work out of a huge multinational base in Kandahar as it manages provisions for troops in southern Afghanistan.

Gov. John Baldacci and the four members of Maine’s congressional delegation spoke at Saturday’s farewell event.
