Lejeune unit tests new approach to safety

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — If safety briefs were like prescription drugs, their warning labels might read something like this: May cause drowsiness.

Like medication, safety stand downs are important and, when administered properly, may help save lives.

One Camp Lejeune-based battalion aimed to do just that Thursday by testing a way to remind its Marines to be careful this upcoming holiday weekend.

The base’s Headquarters and Support Battalion hosted a safety fair, complete with information booths highlighting crucial topics — from personal protective equipment to airport security. Marines were allowed to attend the fair between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Goettge Memorial Field House. The format was simple: check in, visit each booth for a presentation and check out.

Each Marine was required to pick up a green ticket with a list of every booth at the fair. After visiting a booth, Marines had to get the noncommissioned officer manning the booth to initial the ticket. At checkout, Marines turned their tickets in and walked away with an “arrive alive” card containing a list of phone numbers to cab companies.
