Lejeune Marine dies in bike wreck

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina-based Marine was killed in a motorcycle crash Thursday.

Lance Cpl. Joseph Irwin, 21, of 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, died at the scene of the crash around 5 p.m. in Sneads Ferry, N.C., a small fishing community at Camp Lejeune’s back gate, according to a report from The Daily News of Jacksonville.

Irwin lost control of his 2005 Suzuki and collided with a car. A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper told the newspaper that Irwin was left of center at the time of the crash. The driver and passengers in the car Irwin struck were not injured.

Irwin is the fourth Marine killed in a motorcycle wreck since the fiscal year began on Oct. 1, according to the Naval Safety Center Web site.
