HAMPTON, Va. — The authority governing Fort Monroe’s future is asking Congress for $96.5 million for infrastructure upgrades to the military base.

Local officials say the federal funding will help stimulate $436 million in private capital during the first decade after the Army vacates the base in September 2011.

Fort Monroe Federal Area Development Authority officials say the 570-acre historic military base needs upgrades to its streets and electrical and other systems in order to meet standards.

The authority is teaming up with the city of Hampton and the state in requesting funds for Fort Monroe as part of a federal economic stimulus package.

Officials are looking at how to use the installation once the Army leaves the base.
