BANGOR, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci was among those who came to the Bangor airport to welcome home an air ambulance unit that’s been serving in Iraq for nine months.

Charlie Company of the 126th Aviation Regiment of the Maine Army National Guard returned home before dawn New Year’s Day. The 130-member unit, known as the Black Bears, was responsible for evacuating more than 650 patients during the war. The unit had no casualties.

After their return, members of the 126th were officially dismissed from their duty and waiting crowds went about reuniting themselves with their returned family members.

Baldacci said he’s amazed at the turnouts when Mainers return from war.
