Nimitz sailor charged with attempted murder

SAN DIEGO — A sailor remained in a local jail on $1 million bail on charges including attempted murder.

Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class Latorris DeQuintin Boone, 24, assigned to the aircraft carrier Nimitz, was arrested Dec. 17 by San Diego police following a Dec. 6 shooting during an argument outside a bar in a popular area of Mission Beach known as Belmont Park. A local man was wounded in the incident.

In recent years, the city installed surveillance cameras and more lighting and increased police patrols to curb crime and gang activities around Belmont Park. At times, the area and parking lots are considered off-limits to military service members.

Boone, who was arrested on the Nimitz and booked into the Chula Vista jail, allegedly had a handgun and fired shots into a crowd before escaping in a black truck, police said.

His next court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in San Diego Superior Court.
