PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Smoking is now off-limits in most areas at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center.

A smoking ban announced in June went into effect Thursday.

The Navy says 15 smoking areas on the base have been eliminated since June. Only two will remain to accommodate sailors who live on base and staff who were grandfathered in before the ban was announced.

A smoking ban has been in effect in the medical center’s clinical buildings since at least 1990.
