About $16 million was wasted over two years on leases for nontactical cars and trucks at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan, an investigation by the Department of Defense Inspector General’s Office has found.

Bagram is the primary base for Afghanistan air and ground operations, hosting an Army task force and Air Force wing.

The investigation, released Oct. 31, found many requests for leases were approved with scant review by the unit in charge of base operations, the Combined Joint Task Force-76, and its successor, CJTF-82. Once vehicles were leased, little was done to track how they were used.

“Had CJTF-76 and CJTF-82 enforced Department of Defense motor vehicles regulations ... the U.S. Army could have saved $16 million, which could have been put to better use for operational units,” the IG report said.

In October, the command now in charge of Bagram, CJTF-101, started a registration program for all nontactical vehicles at Bagram with the goal of turning in vehicles not required at the end of their leases, the report said.
