Police charge Drum soldier after standoff

FORT DRUM, N.Y. — Police are charging a Fort Drum soldier with criminal possession of a weapon after a three-hour standoff that ended peacefully.

Staff Sgt. Cornelius Dickson of Lubbock, Texas, is being held in the Jefferson County jail on $40,000 bail.

Authorities say the standoff ended early Wednesday morning. The incident began when a neighbor reported the sound of a gunshot. When police arrived at his apartment, they found the 31-year-old Dickson holding a handgun.

Police blocked off the street and evacuated neighbors before they were able to coax him into surrendering.

The Army says Dickson is a cavalry scout with 3-85 Mountain Infantry. Dickson was deployed to Iraq from August 2005 to July 2006.
