McALESTER, Okla. — Two new buildings have opened at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant that officials say will enhance the facility’s operations.

Base officials spent about $8 million constructing an ammunition outloading building and a woodworking building, said plant Commander Arnold Montgomery.

The Dunnage Mill building refers to the woodworking area where McAAP employees build wooden pallets, packing and bracing to crate ammunition when it’s transported.

The other new facility is known as the LTL, or Less Than a Truck Load, building. It’s an ammunition outloading building where mixed loads can be placed into shipping containers for swift deployment to brigade combat teams.

When U.S. military operations escalated in Afghanistan and Iraq, Montgomery said McAAP employees worked rapidly to provide all the wooden pallets and bracing needed for packing.
