2008 was deadliest year for pilots since 2002

For Air Force pilots, fiscal 2008 was the deadliest year since 2002, according to the Air Force Safety Center.

In the 12 months that ended Sept. 30, nine pilots died in flight accidents; 10 died in 2002.

Four crew members — three navigators and a flight surgeon — also were killed in 2008 — all in the July 21 loss of a B-52H off the coast of Guam.

The overall Class A mishap rate in 2008 was 1.37 accidents for every 100,000 flying hours. A Class A mishap is an accident that causes at least $1 million in damage or a death. That’s the highest rate in three years, but close to average for the past decade.

The Class A accident rate for 2008 could be adjusted as the Safety Center gets updated figures on the number of flight hours flown and repair costs.
