1. Wonder why this is the first time I am hearing about it.
"Since the new VIC was introduced in March 2004, approximately 2.4 million enrolled veterans have been issued the new VIC. VHA estimates that between 3 and 4 million enrolled veterans have not yet been issued a new VIC. VA hopes to complete the massive replacement program within the next 12 months."

They have always been able to send me everything about the stolen information, and updates on agent orange, but when it comes to this............... nothing. Are they hoping many vets don't sign up? Is this just for vets that have filed a claim? I don't understand what their game is, unless it is to somehow claim that since you did not sign up you are no longer eligible. Is there a penalty for not getting the new VIC?

was because I was coming back to Maine after using the VA hospital in Nevada for a while.

2. No kidding!
My VA ID card has my Social Security number printed in its entirety twice on the front.

If I ever lose it, I'll have to locate the person who finds it and ask them to adopt me so I can have some benefits.

4. I just found out about this today
during my VA appointment. Had the photo taken and they said it would be mailed within 5-7 days.

The old card does indeed have sensitive info on it, but will issuing new cards prevent VA employees from taking home laptops that get stolen?
