CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — Camp Pendleton is in the midst of a building boom despite a slowing economy.

The base is undertaking what ultimately could be $2 billion worth of construction projects.

Facilities manager Dave John said the sprawling base will replace World War II-era buildings and beef up existing structures.

Base officials this year are overseeing 25 projects valued at $387 million. In a normal year, the base usually spends $50 million on new construction.

Camp Pendleton recently awarded contracts for a $9.4 million roadside bomb training complex, $54.5 million for a special operations headquarters and $114 million for five new barracks.
