Schwartz: Some Guard units may lose flight missions

BALTIMORE — Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton A. Schwartz told National Guard members Monday that flying missions may be coming to an end for some Guard locations.

A combination of tightening budgets and changing national security requirements is giving way to a future where the Air Force will have fewer assets and fewer flying units, Schwartz said in an early-morning address to the National Guard Association of the United States.

“We will have to made adjustments,” he said. “We cannot sustain flying at every location.”

Schwartz said Guard units are, in part, capable of changing their fate.

“Please do not allow any part of your organization to sit back and wait for new missions to show up,” he said. “The future total force belongs to those who show up for it.”
