7 airmen, 3 sailors arrested going 140 mph

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — It appears that a group of motorcycle riders — many of them service members — didn’t get the memo about obeying traffic laws.

Alabama state troopers said 12 cyclists were arrested after they were clocked at speeds of over 140 miles per hour on Interstate 10. All were stopped Sunday afternoon between the Daphne and Malbis exit ramps. Seven were airmen; three were sailors.

Eleven men and one woman were each charged with speeding and reckless endangerment. The group was placed in the county jail in Bay Minette.

My friend Jim, a Rhode Islander stationed with the Green Berets in North Carolina told me about a late-night encounter he had with a rural deputy. Jim and a half-dozen other Green Berets were blasting down some NC backroads crammed into Jim's little car. A county mounty stopped them, and they all sat nervously waiting for him to approach the car. Officer walked up, bent down to look at the Rhode Island license plate, shook his head slowly, and then approached the driver's side window.

"You boys are a long way from home to be fuckin' up like this."
