Alcohol prices on Guam to increase significantly
Alcohol prices on Guam to increase significantly
By David Allen, Stars and Stripes
Pacific edition, Sunday, August 10, 2008

Military shoppers on Guam will have to dig deeper in their pockets next month for that six-pack of beer or bottle of Canadian Club.

That’s because a provision in the 2008 defense appropriations bill restricted the Army and Air Force Exchange Service from bringing alcohol to the island via military transportation.

AAFES instead must buy the alcohol through vendors that "are subject to substantial shipping charges," said AAFES spokesman Judd Anstey.

Anstey said prices are expected to increase between 40 percent and 50 percent for some items, and there may be a smaller selection.

The price of a 12-pack of Miller Lite beer is expected to jump from $7.50 to $8.99 on Sept. 1, Anstey said. A 750 ml bottle of Sutter Home Moscato wine will rise from $5.49 to $8.99, he said. And a liter bottle of 6-year-old Canadian Club whiskey will cost $17.79, an increase of two dollars.
