Navy names new PEO Ships
Navy names new PEO Ships
Staff report
Posted : Thursday Aug 7, 2008 17:15:09 EDT

The Navy announced Wednesday that Rear Adm. William Landay had been assigned as the new program executive officer for ships.

Landay, a surface warfare officer and the current chief of naval research, takes over the position at a time when the Navy has radically changed its shipbuilding plans, having decided to resume building Arleigh Burke-class destroyers after more than a decade of planning for a class of advanced, large new Zumwalt-class destroyers.

According to his official biography, Landay is a 1978 Naval Academy graduate, and his career has included a sea tour aboard the frigate Nicholas, command of the high-speed missile hydrofoil Aquila and the destroyer Paul Hamilton, and wide experience as a training and acquisitions officer. He also was the PEO for Littoral and Mine Warfare from 2004 to 2006.

Landay takes the position of PEO Ships after its previous occupant, Rear Adm. Charles Goddard, was relieved of command July 3 when an investigation by the Navy’s Inspector General substantiated allegations of “personal misconduct” involving a subordinate.
