GREAT FALLS, Mont. — A yearlong mission to remove 50 intercontinental ballistic missiles from underground silos across north-central Montana has been completed, military officials said Thursday.
Col. Mike Fortney said the last of the Minuteman III nuclear missiles was removed earlier this week in preparation for August’s deactivation of Malmstrom Air Force Base’s 564th Missile Squadron.
Top military officials said in 2006 that it was no longer necessary for the country to have 500 ICBMs on alert. They chose to deactivate the 564th — nicknamed “The Odd Squad” — because its missiles used a different communications system than the nation’s nine other squadrons.
“This is somewhat of a sad day in some respects,” said Lt. Col. Wayne Shaw, commander of the 564th. “On the other hand, I am extremely proud.”
Fortney said members of the missile squadron would transfer to other jobs on other bases, and Malmstrom would lose 492 of its approximately 3,600 military personnel because of the deactivation.
