BANGOR, Wash. — The Navy wants to build a second explosives handling wharf at its Bangor submarine base on Hood Canal.

The wharf, which looks like a huge floating garage, would be used to load missiles and torpedoes aboard the 560-foot Trident submarines. Trucks would deliver weapons to the wharf on trestled roads.

The Navy says it needs the new wharf to service the eight Trident ballistic missile subs based at Bangor.

The Navy is preparing an environmental impact statement and has scheduled an open house on June 26 at the Silverdale Community Center to explain the project. Work on the new wharf is expected to be completed by April 2011.
