3rd Marine sentenced in sex case
3rd Marine sentenced in sex case

Pacific edition, Thursday, June 12, 2008

An Iwakuni Marine was sentenced to 15 months of confinement and a bad-conduct discharge Tuesday for charges stemming from an alleged gang rape last year.

Gunnery Sgt. Carl M. Anderson, 39, was convicted by court-martial of committing indecent acts, dereliction of duty, fraternization, conspiracy and adultery, the Iwakuni Marine Corps Air Station public affairs office said.

Charges of rape and kidnapping were dropped in the case. Anderson, who was ready to retire from the Marine Corps in October, was demoted to E-1 and will lose all pay and allowances during his confinement.

During a night out in Hiroshima, Anderson and three other Marines picked up a 19-year-old woman from a club and drove her to a deserted parking lot, where they had sex with her six times, according to guilty pleas from other Marines charged in the case.

The woman, a Japanese national, took the stand several times in military court hearings and testified the four Marines kidnapped and raped her.
