BELLEVILLE, Ill. — Republican Rep. John Shimkus has had a relationship with the Army for 32 years, both on active duty and as a member of the Reserve.

Shimkus was a graduate of West Point Military Academy and served on active duty in the Army from 1980 to 1985. He joined the Army Reserve in 1985 as a captain and, over time, reached the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Shimkus says he reached the point this year of having to advance in rank or retire, and chose to retire due to his commitments as a congressman. A retirement ceremony with his Washington, D.C., Reserve unit was held May 14.
