A new look at who reviews adult magazines

The House Armed Services Committee wants to place new, specific guidelines on the structure of the Pentagon board that reviews sexually explicit materials to determine whether they can be sold on military installations.

The board would be required to have nine people, at least one of whom has experience managing or advocating for military family programs, and is also eligible to shop in the commissaries and exchanges.

The secretary of defense would appoint a total of six members “to broadly represent the interests of the patron base served by the defense commissary system and exchange system,” according to the committee’s version of the 2009 defense authorization bill.

The other three members of the board would be appointed by the secretaries of the Army, Air Force and Navy.

This is in contrast to current Defense Department regulations that focus on board members from the military exchanges. Current Defense Department rules require that the secretary of each military department appoint one representative from its military exchange services to serve on the board, for a total of four. The services may also appoint a senior member from the military departments. Information was not available about how many people now serve on the board.
