Italian contractors discovered seven bombs Thursday while searching for unexploded ordnance at the Dal Molin airfield in Vicenza, officials say.

The bombs, dating to the World War II era, vary in size and type, according to the news release issued by the Southern European Task Force (Airborne).

Five of the bombs were of Italian origin and two were U.S.-made, according to another release issued by the office of Paolo Costa, the Italian government’s commissioner responsible for the proposed U.S. use of the airfield.

The contractors discovered the bombs in the northwest section of the airfield and notified Italian military authorities, who are responsible for disposing of the munitions.

It was the second time that unexploded bombs had been found buried in the airfield since contractors started clearing the site last fall for construction of barracks and offices for the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
