Fil assumes command of Eighth Army

Newly promoted Lt. Gen. Joseph F. Fil has taken over command of Eighth Army in South Korea, where he also will serve as chief of staff of U.S. Forces Korea.

Fil, who commanded 1st Cavalry Division during its recent deployment in Iraq, replaces Lt. Gen. David P. Valcourt, who becomes deputy commander and chief of staff of the Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Va.

Valcourt has commanded the U.S. field army in South Korea since April 2006.

Fil, an armor officer, was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1976. He has had several troop assignments with 1st Cav, including tours as a battalion, brigade and division commander.

Fil also has commanded the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif., and in 2004-05 commanded the Civilian Police Training Team of the Multi-National Security Transition Command in Iraq.
