Commander: Demand for MRAPs being met

A Maxx-Pro model of the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle emerges from a hold on a commercial ship delivering MRAPs to the Port of Shuaiba in Kuwait in December. The MRAPs, heavily armored combat vehicles designed to protect war fighters from roadside bombs, were ordered by the Pentagon for use in Iraq and Afghanistan.

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait — A major supply chain here is meeting the demand for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) chief said last week.

Army Brig. Gen. Kevin A. Leonard also said there has not been a stronger push to get the MRAPs into war zones at a faster clip.

While the Marine Corps recently stated it was scaling back requests for the bulky armored vehicles because of difficulties maneuvering them on tight streets in Iraq, Leonard said there had been no problems getting them on time to those who need them.

In addition, there hasn’t been any added urgency placed on the 1st TSC to deliver the MRAPs and priorities remain unchanged, Army officials said.

“We’ve stayed on plan. There’s no sense of anybody going around with their hair on fire over this,” Leonard said. “There was a reasoned, thought-out fielding plan and we are enabling that plan.
