Navy to monitor quality of air at Gricignano base

NAPLES, Italy — U.S. and Italian scientists are expected to place air-monitoring stations on the Navy’s base in Gricignano in the near future to test for potentially harmful chemicals residents might be breathing, Navy officials said.

The measure is part of a much larger analysis by environmental and health experts who are now in Naples to determine what, if any, health risks are associated with living here.

A town hall meeting is slated for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the support site theater to provide residents with updates, said Lt. Cmdr. Wendy Snyder, a spokeswoman for Navy Region Europe.

Navy officials have held meetings and set up a Web site to address health concerns, but information on developments and plans has been ambiguous.

For example, PowerPoint slides posted on the official Naples Community Health Awareness Web site tout the monitoring stations, but officials could provide no details, such as how many will be placed on the base or where they will be installed.
