Air Force postpones decision on cyber command

WASHINGTON — The Air Force has postponed a decision about the site of the new headquarters for its cyber mission.

Air Force spokesman Ed Gulick on Monday said the original date of the decision, Oct. 1, has been replaced with an unknown date “closer to the end of the year” and probably in December.

Gulick said the need to conduct environmental impact studies on potential sites for Cyber Command headquarters forced the Air Force to delay its decision.

“It takes that long to do it,” he said.

Barksdale Air Force Base is one of 15 contenders for Cyber Command headquarters, which will have authority over the Air Force’s mission to protect the nation’s computer and communication systems from enemy attack. The cyber mission would also have an offensive capability.
