Connecticut arriving at new homeport today

TACOMA, Wash. — The submarine Connecticut is slated to arrive at its new duty station at Naval Base Kitsap Tuesday, completing the almost two year process of relocating all three Seawolf-class subs to the area.

The Connecticut, transferred from Groton, Conn., has been at sea since July 2007 conducting missions in the western Pacific. It was the last boat scheduled for transfer to the Puget Sound as part of a realignment aimed at shifting by 2010 60 percent of the Navy’s submarines to the Pacific while leaving about 40 percent in the Atlantic. The submarines were previously evenly divided between the two oceans.

The arrival of the Connecticut brings the number of boats in the area to 14, including two guided-missile subs.

Home porting all the Seawolf class subs at Kitsap will help streamline training and maintenance, said Lt. Kyle Raines, spokesman for Submarine Group 9.

“You now have all three of the Seawolf class submarines here in the Pacific Northwest, which means that all the training and readiness operations can be made best use of,” he said. “It allows for the best use of the limited resources by pooling the talent here.”
