Female veteran celebrates 100th birthday

ATTLEBORO, Mass. — The oldest female veteran in Massachusetts turned 100 in an occasion marked with a surprise party attended by local politicians, friends and admirers.

Irene Davey was delighted and shocked when she walked into the crowd Friday at Rev. Larson Senior Center in Attleboro.

Davey worked as a motor pool driver and recruiter during World War II after joining the Army in 1943 at a time when few women enlisted.

She said she joined because her late husband had joined the Air Force.

Davey never went overseas, but recalled how hard it was to drive wounded soldiers to the hospital at Fort Devens.
