Earlier today I posted a story about an experience I had as a child. I got some positive feedback so I'm posting another story.
A little background before you read it. The story I wrote was written after I attended a talk given by one of the "Little Rock Nine". For those of you who are too young to know who I'm talking about, the Little Rock Nine were a group of young blacks who integrated Little Rock's Central High School in 1957 with the help of the National Guard. The 50th Anniversary of that momentous occasion was celebrated in Arkansas and at various other locations across the United States.
In Los Angeles we had a gathering where one of the Little Rock Nine spoke. It was one of the most memorable talks I've ever sat through. When he was done, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. I am a black woman who was born in 1957 so I don't personally remember those events. But my husband is ten years older than I and he remembered. The interesting thing is my husband is white. After attending the event, we each wrote a piece.
My husband entitle his, "The More Things Change: Remembering the Little Rock Nine".
I entitled mine, "The More They Remain the Same: Remembering Forced Busing".
