This thread blew me away...
Click on the link and go to the thread in GD...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x3949027

This is the kind of thing, I don't expect to see here. What's worse is the topic he posted in GD was NOMINATED for the main page.

I alerted a mod, that if it was placed on main page, I would very much like a refund of my donation to DU. I don't expect to come here and see crap like this. Blacks in a disaster situation being called 'incompetent' or 'stupid.'

What about having some compassion for being in a horrible situation when it is difficult to even process what is going on, much less knowing what to do in the moment...

I... I don't know. Maybe I'll try later. I just am stunned. Stunned.

and even some people on DU buy into it.

imo, since the brilliant evacuation was planned for the haves and not the have-nots. WTF?? I know I keep repeating it ad nauseum but how the hell can you have a PLAN that leaves out a segment of the populace...and the day after video clips of motorcades abandoning the area fill the airwaves declare it a 'success'? Now, of course, its flawed but that first day I saw folks crowing over its success.

And, even without going to my furthest left place, I had to wonder if the have-nots were deemed expendable, an 'oh well' casualty all along. Blacks aren't the only ones suffering but the photos of the 'domes and people wading through water, clutching babies and seniors while screaming for help and, yes, looting, are predominately of black people at their worst. EVEN UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES no allowances are made for conditions waaaay beyond our control. And, saying that does not brand me an apologist for villains. But, gee, I am sorry all those black folks look so rough, appear a little frustrated and don't articulate well into the microphones. Hey, it be's like that in times like this.

I had a guest in my house - under my very roof - who casually remarked, 'the left is making it worse than it is' and I snapped, completely lost it. Here sat a person totally non-political, who doesn't even watch the damned news and even he thinks every bad thing that happens is spun by the left! I'm holding on tight today, willing myself to believe there's a reason to hope. It's hard.

3. I am no longer surprised by that kind of thing.
Sadly.

I was on last night. I was so pissed and tired and deeply upset that I couldn't even post in that thread. I tried to hide in the Lounge, and he went there to. He was disrupting other threads, in addition to the what he started. Some people get high on the attention, I guess.

7. Hi wildeyed--I saw that, too...
I initially encountered him and this, mess he wrote in the lounge. I responded, but simultaneously hit alert. I also let it be known, that had better not end up on the opening page. :grr:

I was completely blown away because not even a few days ago, I offered that person support on a situation they were dealing with. From my heart and sincerely just wanting to help and be supportive to another DU member.

Saddens me that no thought at all was taken prior to saying such things. It's as if he took pride in it. Just disgusting...

in the USA if you aren't white. Racism is over and we're holding hands and singing "Kumbaya." :sarcasm:

6. Yeah, I saw that and the stupid GD thread.

The fact that people at DU are spinning madly that this situation has nothing to do with racism, well, just adds to the bad vibe I've been getting from GD for awhile. And this may make me sound prejudiced as all get out, but these people denying have to be white. We just discussed this in my ecology class (I go to Howard) about how if the majority left in NO where white, this wouldn't have happened. And thankfully some people do get it, I just hope the others eventually figure it out and stop living in some lala land where racism stops because of a national tragedy.

Edit: Someone in GD gets it. Lets see if the "it's not racism" crowd shows up. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4591976#4592473

8. You don't sound predjudiced saying so, just honest...
Nothing at all wrong with that. It's not shocking to me that caucasians in this country are still so blind--I just naively didn't expect to find such glaring ignorance here at DU.

Honestly, I called a few people in GD on that last night. Told them point blank, unless they have walked in ethnic skin in this country, they really needed to be more sensitive, and to stop denying what they know nothing about.

Just drink a big old glass of shut the f*** up, please!

10. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in DU
I forget that it's nowhere close to representative to the US--for better or worse.

Just drink a big old glass of shut the f*** up, please!

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!! :toast: At least both of those were locked and GD has some threads by people who get it this time around.

11. Yes--you're right. It seems just when I couldn't take another
idiot saying insane things, the late-night battallion signed on and kicked much ass!

Seriously, all of a sudden, there were all kinds of DU'ers responding to the ignorance with some really insightful, kind, witty remarks. Several people cutting down the losers in a big way. It made me feel better.

I do have to give it up to the mods here. If you let them know something is going down--they will handle it. I guess that's part of why I stay.

:hi:

Not all here are blind.

9. Man oh man
I'm white, but have lived in mulitethnic neighborhoods my entire life. Wouldn't have it any other way. I see examples of racism in my community from everything to police response to funding for sidewalk repair. It's situations like these when racism is so in your face that folks have a hard time looking at it. We writhe and twist and try to call it any other thing that what it is. It's a big chunk of truth to swallow, and we choke on it.

12. YES--You nailed it!
:hi:

it really seemed like people were choking and writhing and saying anything at all to not call it EXACTLY what it was.

Do people here think WE LIKE calling people racists? I know I don't. I go to great pains to not have to use that word, or to label others something so ugly. At the same time, I've been on this earth long enough, and had enough experiences that have taught me to recognize it--and to call things as they are. To do anything but that isn't helping the situation or anyone. That's just deluding myself, or others.

I still love the quote by Maya Angelou. When people show you who they are, believe them...

I do.

Thank you for posting your thoughts, and your support!

I hadn't seen the apology. I sorta read it, but have no comment. Can't have my post count going too high too fast...it's hard work keping a low post count. LOL!

Peace

17. (sigh) yes, I saw it too...
As another said here, I was pretty underwhelmed by it, too. I chose not to comment in it.

It didn't seem as much an apology to me as much as an opportunity to 'explain' and further engage in his goofy theories...

15. I have been looking all over for that thread.

Thanks for posting it here.

I was fit to be tied when I saw the title of that thread: "I am sick and FUCKING tired of all this "racism" talk"

My response: "And I am sick and FUCKING tired of all this racism! It has EVERYTHING to do with race.

Although a lot of DU'ers judge folks by their post count...they shouldn't. I've been a member in good standing since the beginning (2001) and, as you can see, I have a very low post count. I'm in DU all day, every day...I truly love this place. That being said, from the 2001 until now, I've not encountered anything that has really pissed me off until the above-mentioned post.

Peace

Edited for clarity.
