from the point of view of 'is he crazy?!?! is he on crack?!?' but not much attention paid to the reasons he talked about for wanting a break. I kept waiting for them to address it and nothing....even the people around him, his publicist, his co-writer, etc. seemed to chalk it up to a breakdown and never addressed what he said about racism on teevee. One thing in particular that stuck out was this part of the Time piece:
"The third season hit a big speed bump in November 2004. He was taping a sketch about magic pixies that embody stereotypes about the races.
The black pixie—played by Chappelle—wears blackface and tries to convince blacks to act in stereotypical ways. Chappelle thought the sketch was funny, the kind of thing his friends would laugh at. But at the taping, one spectator, a white man, laughed particularly loud and long. His laughter struck Chappelle as wrong, and he wondered if the new season of his show had gone from sending up stereotypes to merely reinforcing them. "When he laughed, it made me uncomfortable," says Chappelle. "As a matter of fact, that was the last thing I shot before I told myself I gotta take f______ time out after this. Because my head almost exploded." "
It's a very fine line between making fun of racism and having people miss it and just laugh at racist sterotypes...I think being on a network like comedy central (which openly says their target demographic is young white men) is enough to make anyone second guess their effectiveness after a while. But no talk of this from comedy central of course...they'd rather put out the meme that he's loopy, crazy, maybe on drugs hint hint.
I know most of this post wasn't in answer to your direct question - but no, in light of their treatment of Chappelle's concerns I doubt they'd ever have a show for Paul Mooney. :(
