OK, I'm bragging--But my daughter got into Harvard and Princeton/class '09
Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 03:45 PM by FrenchieCat
My African American Daughter got into some great schools apart from the ones listed above; Tufts U, Emory U., U of Pudget Sound, etc...

But her final decision was between Harvard and Princeton.

She has decided on Harvard!

Also, I personally know three other African-Americans that are going into the Harvard Class of '09.....which is a lot for me to know in a class of 1,650.

I am proud of my daughter, and I hope that she ends up going into politics one day (hey, I could be her campaign manager)!

But right now, she's talking phychology Major or comparative literature (French vs. English). She's expressed a desire to go to Medical or Law school after completing her undergraduate studies. She's young though....and may change her major before it's All done.

I just wanted to share the good news with other African-American DUers and assert my "Mama Bragging Rights" which I have tried to use sparingly to date.....but at this point, can't seem to help myself!

Seriously though.....it appears that the American Dream is still available to those who grab onto the opportunities, but I really don't know how long this will last.....considering.

The more of us at these prestigious Universities, the better!

I'm just afraid that the doors will be closing soon....just a bad premonition that I have. Whether it will be the tuition fees or the doing away with AA.....I just think that we are starting to go back into the other direction...slowly, but surely!

3. Congratulations!
To your daughter...and to the proud mama too!

Did she have to take the new SAT? I thought the old one was enough of a bear but the new one is even worse, I heard. She deserves even more credit for that!

I think you're right about the backwards flow, but hopefully people like your daughter will help stop that by showing the benefits of AA and diversity.

4. Thank You, SemiCharmedQuark
I think that she and others like her will only help help benefit our cause, because most understand that they will be "representin'".

She also understands very much that the opportunities that she has may not be there for the next generation, and that part of the deal is that she must give back to HER community to help others in the most meaningful way that she can.

She is the child of an immigrant and her dad was born in the West Oakland Projects. She knows who she is and she understands her unavoidable role in the larger scheme of things.

She told me, (paraphrasing) ....Maman, there's three types of students who come to Harvard....there's the Old money students, the New money students, and the "No" money students. I have no allusions about where I fit, and I consider it a place of honor. Sure, I'm going to get an excellent education, but I also know that the other 1/2 of the goal is for me to educate.

From that statement, I'm pretty sure that she's got it!

7. Wow, she sounds really brilliant!

She'll definitely help the cause by showing that minority students are NOT academically inferior to whites. I know that sounds like such an idiotic opinion, but you wouldn't be surprised how many whites think like that. Not only will she prove that they are equal, she will prove that they can kick anyone's ass!

11. That's so very kind of you to say that.....
I posted here because I knew folks here would understand and appreciate that accomplishment and what it might mean.

Also know that I have revealed a lot more of my personal history in threads in this forum than anywhere else.

13. Congrats!
Good to hear! Always good to see black people getting into the elite colleges and proving the naysayers (like the ones that hang around in GD) wrong.

:applause: :toast: :woohoo:

Now, the fun REALLY begins--she's gotta study and graduate.

19. Oh, it's been a L-O-N-G time
she graduated in '75! I just talked to her and she sends her CONGRATS and Very Best Wishes!!! Funny enough, (1st choice) Princeton did not accept her, saying with her grades and board scores she could pick any university in the world. :eyes: That was then. This is NOW.

 to your daughter from some very proud-of-her women who "been there done that." And a BIG  to YOU!!! WHATTA MOM!!!

20. Wow, That is going back a ways!
She was obviously one that cleared the path for the young people of today. So she was there when not as many women or minorities were being accepted? Or was she there at a time when there was a surge to deal with AA?

I was told that this current class is the first class ever to have a larger ratio of females than males. That prior, it has been about 50/50 for the last few years...and that before, it was had always been a majority male ratio.

Ask her to pass along any stories that she feels would be helpful to my daughter and others like her. Also, are there any clubs or sororities she would recommend to young African-American women currently entering college? It would be nice to hear from the perspective of a trail blazer!
