NAACP investigating treatment of African American at Harrison Co. (Ind.) jail
WHAS11) After allegations of abuse at the Harrison County Indiana Jail, now the NAACP is stepping in.

They said an African American inmate was put into a restraint chair, a spit-hood full of pepper spray was placed on his head and his cell was filled with pepper spray.

The officer who allegedly did this to the inmate was terminated, but was then rehired by Sheriff Deatrick three days later.

The day after WHAS11’s first story about this incident aired, 18-year-old Tevin Bald was released from the jail.

And on Wednesday, the NAACP told WHAS11 that, if true, what was done to him was a violation of his civil rights.

But they also said they are now investigating the possibility that the abuse may have been racially motivated, since Bald was one of only a few African American inmates in the jail at the time.

Dustin White, NAACP legal counsel, said “This is such a heinous violation of civil rights that we need to make sure is dealt with; dealt with severely, so a message is sent that this type of behavior is not tolerated in any way shape or form.”
