Poll question: Slide guitar gawds -- choose your slide!
Edited on Sun Apr-18-10 05:32 PM by BethCA66
Hey, there! Old Mark sent me this way. Huzzah! If you find me annoying, and you probably will, take it up with him. ;-P

So I just plunked down a pittance on an Epi SG clone (teeny Express), and in my mind's eye, I'm going to be The Female Derek Trucks, despite the fact that I'm probably old enough to be his mother.

I'm having trouble keeping a Pyrex bottleneck on my finger (pitiful), and I'm thinking about using something else, like maybe a socket. I have a metal pinky gizmo, but it's too big for my pinky and too small for my ring finger. (I've lost the evolutionary lottery w/r/t Guitar God Genes, but I will not be dissuaded.)

So, sliders, what do you use to make your Git-Tar sing?

1. Jim Dunlop glass slide on my ring finger...
I have tons of different slides that people have given me (brass. steel, ceramic, bone, even one of D Allman's Coricidin bottles), but I prefer the $4 Dunlops.

2. bottleneck blues
I took a bottleneck workshop from a blues guy here in Florida and he highly recommended a broken off wine bottle (gotta take a torch to the jagged edges before using it.)

4. I Use Pyrex
I like a lighter one for electric and a heavy one for acoustic. I like the standard size because i can use it on either the ring or little finger. And, i want a full length one because i want to be able to slide all 6 strings when i'm in different tunings.

I've tried everything over time, and i always end up back with glass.

6. Wine bottle with very thick glass
but it's been decades since I used a slide.

I'm working on a Bach suite right now... maybe I should try using a slide. :D

8. Glass, siver, bone...
I generally use a Dunlop 5/6 on my ring Finger. Since I play in either Open G or D, this leaves the 6th string open for me. Drone, y'know.

Years ago, I got tired of the chrome/socket sound and had a silversmith make one cool slide out of jeweler's silver. Great, smooth sound.

But my choice is bone. Take a marrow bone that looks like it would fit, cook it good and suck the marrow out (gotta be part of it/you, you know). File it down how you like it and go to town.
