Pepperbear's top 5 pop non-Beatle pop singles of all time
My current top 5.

1. Sugar, Sugar/The Archies - shookie shookie percussion, double entendre lyrics, a keyboard hook from hell, warm fuzzy, feel good, and the bass is about a semi-tone sharp....sublime. a masterpiece (oh and it's a cartoon group, so gorillaz you OWE EVERYTHING to them)

2. Bohemian Rhapsody/Queen - 7 minute + songs? been there, done that...but not with an operatic break in the middle....I am not aware of any radio station that edited it for airplay.

3. Lady Marmalade/Labelle - pishy posh on that weak Aguillera/Pink rendition. Ladies, show them how it's done: platinum spacesuits and out of this world hair, and no divas trying to out do each other...just miss Labelle slamming it home.

4. Young Americans/David Bowie - I live for "play that one damned song that can make me break down and cry"

5. Rosalita/Bruce Springsteen - I "air band" to this song all the time. It's embarrassing, but I don't care. It has the two main elements of any successful early Bruce tune..a car and a couple who "just gotta get outta this place." the energy is through the roof on this track.

Yes! Ya know Art Neville played keyboard on LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade" -- and he co-wrote "six strings down." I'm such a blues fan that I had to add that.

2. That's A Good List
I'm not a Springsteen fan, but that is a good tune. Your #'s 2, 3, & 4 are great choices. You can dance to them. I would give them an 85!

I might add something like "Pleasant Valley Sunday" or "Valerie" by the Monkees. Wonderful production, catchy hooks, and nice arrangements. Those are pretty darned good, too!

In no particular order:

"Jump, Jive and Wail" - Louis Prima
"Kicks" - Paul Revere and the Raiders
"Going Out of My Head" - Little Anthony & the Imperials (IIRC)
"I've Been Loving You Too Long" - Otis Redding (alternate: "Mr. Pitiful")

4. those are great....
the little anthony tune in particular is a "fly on the wall" track for me...meaning I would like to have been there when it was recorded.

kicks/paul revere: could get credit for being among the first of the mod-a-go-go anti hippie/drug
tunes.

louis prima: along with louis jordan, another missing link between jump jazz and rock and roll. Love it!

you can't ever go wrong with an otis tune. nuff sed.

flowers on the wall: sing along tune with great harmonies, and of course immortalized in Pulp Fiction.

I like your taste. :toast: :hi:
