Put your ring finger on the 6th fret of the first string and your LITTLE finger on the 7th fret. This gives you two fingers to do the bend up which should give you more control over the bend and should stabilize your hand at the bottom of the neck. It also should make your hand a little more vertical which ought to make your middle finger easy to keep in place and make the bend a little easier, too.
Having two fingers do the bend will also make it easier with your existing string gauge since you have the extra strength from the second finger. The Professor
