The unluckiest band in America....
So.. in November of 2003, I joined a band that some long-time friends had put together. So we consist of6 highly experienced musicians, with yars of gigging and recording under our belts. Our music (which I will post links to as soon as the recording is done) is heavy, yet very "radio-friendly". However, I'm beginning to tihnk we're as cursed as Def Leppard. For example: We (against our better judgement) entered into a battle of the bands sponsered by the Jillians chain. We were awarded second place, and the place went absolutely berserk. The winning band and judges had to be escorted out of the building for their own safety. Now, these weren't people that we brought with us who were freaking out.. it was a mob of people who had never heard of us before that night... so, after the show, one of our singers hops in her car and gets pulled over 2 blocks away from the club. 6 months of house-arrest later, she's able to start practicing and gigging again.. then, we set up a show at Tacoma's premier club, Fender's. 2 weeks before the show, my bass player and I get to our practice room to find out somebody broke in and stole about half of our gear. We scraped together enough replacement equipment to do the show, and eventually got our stuff back. (we know who took it, and are still waiting to run into him.. but I digress). The booking agent who gave us that show was immensly impressed, and told us he would have lots of shows for us, including some out-of-state gigs... so, what happens next? Our bass player decides he's geting burned out, and quits. So, all work with that particular promoter goes on hold for 6 months until we can find a new bassist and get him up to speed.. we had planned on having our cd release party at the afformentioned Fender's this summer.. so, naturally, the owners decided to sell it and turn it into a piano bar. (On a related note, at least 2 other clubs ended up shutting down within a month of us playing there.) Now, last month, a friend of mine hooked us up with a last-minute show at a killer club in Olympia. (A market we hadn't yet looked into). I called Brien, the booking agent for the club, worked out the details, and we went in and kicked ass. Brien then offered us a Friday night headlining show for the 15th of April, and was so impressed, he told us we could play there any time, and bring our own opening bands, sight-unseen (something which is pretty rare, given most booking agents' desire to be in control of the show). Now, guess what? I got an email last week from an Olympia area promoter I had been trying to network with. She knows Brien well, and has worked with him for years... it seems the show on the 15th, as well as all shows at this particular venue, is on hold for the moment because Brien was found dead in his apartment this past Wednesday... I swear.. if this band does somehow get anywhere, the VH1 "Behind the Music" on us should be a fucking classic.
