My Mom tried to sell Mary Kay for a while, so I do have some idea what I'm talking about. The perkiness they encourage and the enthusiasm exhipited at thier rallies is a bit odd, at least to me. I'm certainly entitled to my opinion.

That wasn't my point though. They test on foreskins removed from tiny baby boys. Foreskins used for testing have to be removed without drugs. They pay hospitals for them. Thus they create a profit motive for hospitals to circumcise healthy boys (a practice that runs counter to scientific evidence and professional guidelines) without benefit of pain relief (also a practice that runs counter to scientific evidence and professional guidelines.) The fact that I brought up the mutilation of healthy babies for product testing and you're worried that I'm (God forbid) stereotyping Mary Kay consultants wories me. Shouldn't we liberals be speaking up for the opressed, not the well dressed?

They're everywhere. Tobacco company owns Oreos and Triscuits. Oreos-I don't miss, but Triscuits-different story.
Now days, I read the company labels as I do the ingredients. I shop at a Co-op. They carry Boca Burgers and their marketer said it got the best real estate in the freezer case because they sell the most, and that's what their rep wanted. I was irked by that, because that is what keeps the little guy from selling more and said that.

They arrange the freezer space now vertically, so Garden burger and Bocas occupy space on the same level.

I like Garden burger, if they are available in your area. The flame roasted is my fave.

I'd be extremely leery of their soy products, because ADM (Farmer Fuckers to the World) I believe, controls about 80% of the soy market. They, of course have no qualms about GMOs...check what it says about the soy product. Is it Organic? Do they clearly state 'No GMOs'?

And check the Kellogg's thing. I don't use them, so I don't know.

11. On what basis is it decided that these companies are Republican?

For example, I know Michael Dell contributes to Republicans but his former CFO, Tom Meredith, is one of Austin's biggest Democratric fundraisers. Of course, the operative word is "former" but doesn't that mean that other Dell stockholders and executives may be Democrats as well?

40. When all of the options look rotten

Some catagories just have strong republican supporters. So I'm going to do my own second criteria review on those.

For me, this isn't totally about who they voted for. (am I opening a huge can of worms here?) I have a vision of the society I want to live in and what I want to leave my kids.

So, I'm looking for local, not multinational, and if they pay living wages and provide healthcare. If they do that without the government having to force them to, then I'm willing to consider giving them my money. This includes the environment and lots of other stuff.

I think most of these businesses will lean liberal, just because.

We have local groceries and a co-op, so I can avoid Safeway who is trying to back-pedal on wages and healthcare. And we just joined Costco, which is huge, because of their employment practices.

and stay within them for the purposes of our group.

I was hoping to get a strong consensus for boycotting a dozen or two companies that donate huge amounts of money to rethugs and use that money to influenc legislation against our interests; using labor and environmental practices as a secondary factor. This is beginning to look like a vendetta against any big business. We need to reward the good companies, as well as boycott the bad ones.

Of course we buy locally, but do we buy locally from rethug contributors?

Another goal is to live frugally and buy as little as possible.

No one is forcing anyone to do anything. But check out the goals of this group.

I know this company's upper management philosophy leans toward the right but after doing some research I found that their monetary contributions usually are fairly close to the even mark between the two major parties, even though the edge has always been toward the repub side.

Bank of America gives to Democrats; Florida Power and Light is not an option to boycott, unless you are willing to forgo electricity, I still have not received any verification on why IBM is on this list, their employees give generously to Dems, etc. etc.

The K Street Project is a report tracing the political affiliation, employment background and political donations of members of Washington's premier lobbying firms, trade associations and high-tech companies.


The report* compiles Federal Election Commissions filings for each individual's political contributions to candidates, parties and political action committees which are overwhelmingly partisan.

that wasn't there before and I'm not really interested in "going there." Many of the lobbyists are for progressive causes, Democrats, and others that don't particularly raise my hackles very much. I happen to support a few good PACs and lobbyists mayself. It all depends on what they are lobbying for. But I'll have to leave that to others to decide. I will not, myself, engage in any boycott that results from this list, which is also outdated.

It is difficult enough just verifying contributions to repugs, without branching out to lobbying and companies that give less than 50% to repugs. If you want this boycott to fail, just make it so onerous that no one can participate in it.

I actually lived in DC for a few years. And K Street and the lobby industry was the last place I would go to find others in the progressive community.

Can you name this 50% or more from the K Street lobby industry that just work on progressive causes? And also what progressive causes they lobby for?

I just don't want to get into that realm. You can start another group that works in the lobbying arena. I just don't see how we have the time and energy to expand this group into that area. It's a good issue, but please not here. If you go through the posts here you will see that I have already made some errors in my research on contributions, based on incorrect data from some websites.

55. Publix Grocery stores and Piggly Wiggly

*sigh* about Publix (major southern grocery chain) but they are one of the biggest grocery political contributors and 97% listed going for republicans.

Off to do more adjusting of my shopping. I'm spending time looking at my whole diet and how I can make adjustments - this looks to be the most major area I can change since it is my largest expense after housing and utilities. The rest mostly consists of choosing less environmentally damaging foodstuffs, ie eating as close to basic, unprocessed food stuffs as possible, plant foods almost entirely (must return to veganism), and eating organic or responsibly IPM farmed foods.

(CNSNews.com) - Two top executives at media giant Viacom, which owns CBS, have given money to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign and are supporting other liberal Democrats this year.

Sumner Redstone, the 81-year-old chairman and chief executive of Viacom, and one of his top lieutenants, Tom Freston, the corporation's co-president, have each given Kerry the maximum $2,000 donation allowed under the law.

"I don't want to denigrate Kerry," Redstone said, "but from a Viacom standpoint, the election of a Republican administration is a better deal. Because the Republican administration has stood for many things we believe in, deregulation and so on. The Democrats are not bad people. ... But from a Viacom standpoint, we believe the election of a Republican administration is better for our company."

I was just looking at the financial criteria. To be candid, I don't think I personally base a boycott on one person's statement regarding which way he was going to vote.

That said, you do bring up a very good point. I think it would be a good idea to include companies that do not have dem friendly policies, ie. toward the environment, employees, unions etc. etc.

Perhaps we can work out a list of what these criteria should be. I have already sorted the companies into a group (just based on their financial contributions ie. those who donated between 55-100% of their financial contributions to the Repug's regardless of the size of the amount). I also think listing their products and suggested alternatives is a good idea.

I will get cracking on a database.

It's so simple and doable. Why make it hard. This way I can just write to the company and say "according www.opensecrets.org you contributed xxx% of money to rethugs and I'm not buying your product." Period, ended. No problem, no mistakes.

They're a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary and I have no clue what thier political donations are like. I just know that they are suing a work-at-home mom who sews cloth diapers. Why? Apparently they feel that Wonderoos (her brand name- Wonder for Wonderful and Roos because they have a pocket) is too close to Underoos (thier children's underpants)dispite the fact that the products do not compete and her item is marketed via the internet while thiers is in brick and mortar stores. Not only do they want her to change her product's name, they also want a portion of her earnings for the entire time she's used that name. As a small business (really small, it's just her as far as I know) she can't afford the 50K or so it would take to fight them, even though the law is on her side.

So if you need some single-sized pocket style cloth diapers, talk to Jessica at wonderoos.com and if you need some underpants steer clear of Fruit of the Loom, okay? Thanks! :)

This is too bad. He did, however, donate to Joe Baca, who is a Dem. This is a tough one because maglites are Made in America, and IMO are an excellent high quality product. Ouch.

Find a business you want to add (something near you maybe. It can be Dem or Repub, we just want to know about them so we can rate them...). (Near you, we have Basha's and I think, a liquor store, but not much else)

Go to the Progressive Pages link to enter information in the proper area. Sapphocrat checks everything over before she adds it, so if it's in the wrong place, don't worry. She'll correct it.

Just keep entering places you know about or hear about that are extra good or extra bad. We always need more clothing stores, grocery stores, local merchants like plumbers, electrical, and so on...and restaurants... (hint here: do you know where the candidates' followers were allowed to have their local meetups? That's a happy face and a star for the management. Look for stuff like that. Or try to remember any candidates' signs out front.

87. I've been looking at Demopedia and IMO

it's not as well suited to our task here as the Progressive Pages are. Demopedia is really more suitable to encyclopedia style entries, research for articles, etc. It's so very freeform that our information would get mixed in with others. Also it requires that people write articles rather than simply enter the information in the limited fields.

Have you had a chance to look at the Progressive Pages? It's really great, very well suited to our purposes. It's almost like a phone book format.. After an entry is made, people can rate the companies and there's a red/blue meter graphic that shows up. I don't think we should move the data over to Demopedia, because I think our information would get lost in the more general information and other political types of research over there. That's just my two cents... :)

The Progressive Pages is solely a buying guide, and Demopedia is more of an encyclopedia.

Some of the larger businesses (such as Clear Channel) will be included, I'm sure, but PP includes ALL types of businesses, large AND small, and rates them according to their sympathies.

We have been working on this for over a month or two, and we really want to keep our original focus and data going. I don't simply want to be swallowed up by Demopedia. Although our goals are similar, they are not the same.

After the Sinclair folks were trying to push the Swift-boat style docs on us around election timeframe and the Nightline reading of the fallen soldiers' names mess too.

So whether or not they have Rethug donors, they still did the right thing when it came to that action. So I'm neutral on that. If you do shop there, make sure you let someone know that the reason why you did was because of their choice to do the right thing there. Hopefully if enough of us communicate that sort of message, they'll do more of that sort of thing in the future.
