1. Why not do it now before things get too out of control?
Then we won't have to duplicate our work. For those of entering info into the database (hint hint), it'll be a little easier!

2. Brookshire's Grocery
It's one evil over another in my stupid suburb out in the boonies. They're ALL repub donors.

Bruce Brookshire personally gave $2000 to Georgie. I had hoped I could switch from Tom Thumb, but at least TT has a better selection. It's cleaner and newer.

Don't worry campers, I'll get into town to Whole Foods whenever I can.

79. Cool link
You are lucky. I miss shopping at my Pavilions in West hollywood!! I didn't realize Safeway corp w

Here in Atlanta, the two big chains seem to be Kroger and Publix -- which I just found out are majority republica donors. As of today, I'm taking my grocery shopping $$ elsewhere -- I just have to figure out where.

5. Interesting.
They pulled out of Texas completely about 5 or 6 years ago, and now they're starting to pop up again.

What's their deal? I'd like more info to include on them in the PPages.

Thanks!

They've been anti-choice for a long time and they also killed and maimed quite a few drivers back when with their old 30-minutes-or-less policy.

Isn't Mary Kay independently held, and donates only to women's health and safety issues?

56. I can remember reading that they...
had some sort of gathering in Dallas a year or so ago. I can't remember if Laura or George was there....and the women, as expected from rich, suburban soccer mom, pink cadillac-driving, brain-dead morons, were BASKING in it.

There's more to this than donations. I'm trying to find a link. It made me NEVER want to buy cosmetics from these Stepford Wives.

76. Let's not stereotype
OK- I'll admit, if I'd seen that Bush thing I'd have puked. Not all Mary Kay consultants are like that
I wouldn't drive a pink cadillac EVER
I wouldn't attend anything W was at unless I had a serious chance of humiliating him with a large audience
I checked for a PETA endorsement before selling the "crap"
I am a non-conformist and have made that abundantly clear to other consultants
I have no children, and certainly no SUV (although I desperately desire a Toyota Prius)
I'm not pushy in sales or anything like that
I was throwing my inventory into boxes for immediate public burning when I thought for one second that company profits were going to the nazis (they aren't)
I spend my modest income on putting myself through college and donating to DU, the ACLU and other groups like Farm Sanctuary and Greenpeace
I spend the time I can afford being self-employed to things like serving on the events committee for my local ACLU chapter, and going door to door (to door to door to door) campaigning for John Kerry.

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but I am not evil, or a stepford wife.

77. I'm glad you're not a Stepford
My Mom tried to sell Mary Kay for a while, so I do have some idea what I'm talking about. The perkiness they encourage and the enthusiasm exhipited at thier rallies is a bit odd, at least to me. I'm certainly entitled to my opinion.

That wasn't my point though. They test on foreskins removed from tiny baby boys. Foreskins used for testing have to be removed without drugs. They pay hospitals for them. Thus they create a profit motive for hospitals to circumcise healthy boys (a practice that runs counter to scientific evidence and professional guidelines) without benefit of pain relief (also a practice that runs counter to scientific evidence and professional guidelines.) The fact that I brought up the mutilation of healthy babies for product testing and you're worried that I'm (God forbid) stereotyping Mary Kay consultants wories me. Shouldn't we liberals be speaking up for the opressed, not the well dressed?

89. Well
Most Mary Kay reps I've known were not rich and well dressed. In fact, they usually sold MK on the side to supplement a crappy job that didn't pay enough. There are plenty of things to rip Mary Kay over, and I think it's possible to do that without insulting and stereotyping those that sell it.

16. Kraft purchased Boca Burgers in 2000
They're everywhere. Tobacco company owns Oreos and Triscuits. Oreos-I don't miss, but Triscuits-different story.
Now days, I read the company labels as I do the ingredients. I shop at a Co-op. They carry Boca Burgers and their marketer said it got the best real estate in the freezer case because they sell the most, and that's what their rep wanted. I was irked by that, because that is what keeps the little guy from selling more and said that.

They arrange the freezer space now vertically, so Garden burger and Bocas occupy space on the same level.

I like Garden burger, if they are available in your area. The flame roasted is my fave.

38. Morningstar Farms is owned by Kellogg's
http://www.kelloggs.com/brand/msfarms/home.html

I'd be extremely leery of their soy products, because ADM (Farmer Fuckers to the World) I believe, controls about 80% of the soy market. They, of course have no qualms about GMOs...check what it says about the soy product. Is it Organic? Do they clearly state 'No GMOs'?

And check the Kellogg's thing. I don't use them, so I don't know.

:hi: Welcome to DU!

10. Great List
Some of the cable companies don't look as bad as I thought. Maybe we should reconsider for those of us who still need some kind of basic service, like me.

SouthTrust bank is getting taken over by Wachovia.
But they're both about 61%.

9. Jen, I'm still questioning your listing IBM
I need a source for the data. Last time I checked most of the employees donated to Democrats, with a few exceptions. The rest looks good, but I'm not giving up NBC prgramming. Too many shows that I like. Also, check AOL, I'm not sure they deserve to be on the list, but I'm not sure they shouldn't either.

For example, I know Michael Dell contributes to Republicans but his former CFO, Tom Meredith, is one of Austin's biggest Democratric fundraisers. Of course, the operative word is "former" but doesn't that mean that other Dell stockholders and executives may be Democrats as well?

14. YUM Brands
owner of KFC, Taco Bell, Long John Silvers, Pizza Hut and A&W American Foods. http://www.yum.com/

Worldwide, the KFC subsidiary accepts the extreme and cruelly treated chickens as food from suppliers. YUM! Brands lied about the action they were taking, posted it on the KFC website and had to be sued to change the lies. They have made promises to stop their suppliers from mistreating the chickens, but the very suppliers that were snitched off have been filmed since the promises to stop mistreating and torturing the chickens as a group and individually.

http://www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com/

The Taco Bell Franchise accepts tomatoes from growers who maltreat and abuse and enslave migrant workers. A migrant worker toiling for the Taco Bell suppliers can spend 6-7 days a week 10-12 hours a day picking 2 tons of tomatoes a day (125 32lb buckets). They are paid about $50 a day. No benefits. Can be beaten. Imprisoned. Taco Bell claims they are not responsible for this.

101. At this level, Lowe's is effectively non-political.
Basically, contributions under $50K don't make a blip on the radar.

Also, when I followed the money with Lowes, the money went into a PAC but never went out to candidates or issue funding. It's sitting in an escrow account somewhere.

Democrats $16,812 (97.93%)

From their info, Safeway looks good to me. Where did you get your info from to say they are bad? There are so many sites, I'm wondering if they all have the same info or if some are incorrect.
I've been seeing this problem on a lot of companies/services/products and want to know who the reliable sources are.

23. Safeway belongs on the "good" list
I propose the following:

No one posts on this list, good or bad, without supporting documentation or sources of information. This will eliminate anecdotal experiences and "it looked like it to me" posts.

Open Secrets and several other websites are available with excellent information and easy to find information.

It was hard when the big 3 were all doing the same thing. Between Albertaon's, Safeway, and Kroger, there were very few places left. Brookshire's and Minyard give to Repugs as well.

With groceries, if you don't have a co-op, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, or Farmer's Market nearby, it's gonna have to be the least of 4 evils, I think.

26. Re: UBS America
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 09:37 AM by Hubert Flottz
Background on some of these businesses, to expose their inter workings and the history of those firms might be useful information to put out about them! When you start digging you might find, that UBS America for Example, is not an American owned investment company at all! You might even find out things like, UBS owns Enron now:

Enron judge OKs UBS buy

<snip>

UBS was selected as the successful bidder for Enron Corp's North American wholesale electricity and natural gas trading business -- its core operations -- last week, after the U.S. company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December.

http://money.cnn.com/2002/01/18/deals/enron_ubs/

Who is UBS???

You and Us. UBS.(You've seen their ads on TV)

Imagine a global financial firm with the heart and soul of a two-person organization. A world-leading wealth management company that sits down with you to understand your needs and goals. An award winning global investment bank and premier global asset management business dedicated to giving you the most personal attention at every level. You and us. Think of it as the most powerful two-person financial firm in the world.

http://www.ubs.com/

So, UBS owns Enron now and plans to start it back up as a giant utility company serving states like California again? What happened to all the money the guys who were running Enron stole, from the customers and investors when Enron crashed? Where did "Kenny Boy" and friends stash all that Enron loot? Where did all that money go? I'd bet it's mostly here:

United Bank of Switzerland(UBS)
Grand Cayman,

http://www.hurricaneimpact.com/UBSwitz.html

I'd even bet that "Kenny Boy", is still making big money off of hidden Enron money on the sly!

**************************************************************

Well we all know about the ties "Kenny Boy" had with Bush, but what about the ties between UBS and Bush?

snip

How a famous American family made its fortune from the Nazis

For the Bush family, it is a lingering nightmare. For their Nazi clients, the Dutch connection was the mother of all money laundering schemes. From 1945 until 1949, one of the lengthiest and, it now appears, most futile interrogations of a Nazi war crimes suspect began in the American Zone of Occupied Germany. Multibillionaire steel magnate Fritz Thyssen-the man whose steel combine was the cold heart of the Nazi war machine-talked and talked and talked to a joint US-UK interrogation team. For four long years, successive teams of inquisitors tried to break Thyssen's simple claim to possess neither foreign bank accounts nor interests in foreign corporations, no assets that might lead to the missing billions in assets of the Third Reich. The inquisitors failed utterly.

Why? Because what the wily Thyssen deposed was, in a sense, true. What the Allied investigators never understood was that they were not asking Thyssen the right question. Thyssen did not need any foreign bank accounts because his family secretly owned an entire chain of banks. He did not have to transfer his Nazi assets at the end of World War II, all he had to do was transfer the ownership documents - stocks, bonds, deeds and trusts--from his bank in Berlin through his bank in Holland to his American friends in New York City: Prescott Bush and Herbert Walker. Thyssen's partners in crime were the father and father-in-law of a future President of the United States.

The allied investigators underestimated Thyssen's reach, his connections, his motives, and his means. The web of financial entities Thyssen helped create in the 1920's remained a mystery for the rest of the twentieth century, an almost perfectly hidden underground sewer pipeline for moving dirty money, money that bankrolled the post-war fortunes not only of the Thyssen industrial empire...but the Bush family as well. It was a secret Fritz Thyssen would take to his grave.

It was a secret that would lead former US intelligence agent William Gowen, now pushing 80, to the very doorstep of the Dutch royal family. The Gowens are no strangers to controversy or nobility. His father was one of President Roosevelt's diplomatic emissaries to Pope Pius XII, leading a futile attempt to persuade the Vatican to denounce Hitler's treatment of Jews. It was his son, William Gowen, who served in Rome after World War II as a Nazi hunter and investigator with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps. It was Agent Gowen who first discovered the secret Vatican Ratline for smuggling Nazis in 1949. It was also the same William Gowen who began to uncover the secret Dutch pipeline for smuggling Nazi money in 1999. (Much more on the Thyssen family and UBS)...

So, UBS made money from the use of slave labor several times over the past 100 years and is still probably doing it today!

You might also add some foreign companies like BAYER to you list!

Bayer, Hoechst AG, IG Farben and Nazi Germany

32. I hate to keep tearing up these lists
but it is imporant to be accurate.

These are companies that belong to GMA, not the GMA PAC that gives to repugs. Some of these companies contribute more to Democrats than to Republicans. It is not only unfair to place them on a boycott list, it makes us look like we don't know what we are doing.

40. When all of the options look rotten
Some catagories just have strong republican supporters. So I'm going to do my own second criteria review on those.

For me, this isn't totally about who they voted for. (am I opening a huge can of worms here?) I have a vision of the society I want to live in and what I want to leave my kids.

So, I'm looking for local, not multinational, and if they pay living wages and provide healthcare. If they do that without the government having to force them to, then I'm willing to consider giving them my money. This includes the environment and lots of other stuff.

I think most of these businesses will lean liberal, just because.

We have local groceries and a co-op, so I can avoid Safeway who is trying to back-pedal on wages and healthcare. And we just joined Costco, which is huge, because of their employment practices.

44. We need to redefine our goals
and stay within them for the purposes of our group.

I was hoping to get a strong consensus for boycotting a dozen or two companies that donate huge amounts of money to rethugs and use that money to influenc legislation against our interests; using labor and environmental practices as a secondary factor. This is beginning to look like a vendetta against any big business. We need to reward the good companies, as well as boycott the bad ones.

Of course we buy locally, but do we buy locally from rethug contributors?

Another goal is to live frugally and buy as little as possible.

No one is forcing anyone to do anything. But check out the goals of this group.

I'm going to delete a suggestion I made above. I know this company's upper management philosophy leans toward the right but after doing some research I found that their monetary contributions usually are fairly close to the even mark between the two major parties, even though the edge has always been toward the repub side.

Ed: Woops, never mind. After hitting the "edit" box in that post I got a message that said I can't do it because too much time had gone by.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 01:39 PM by Titian
This is a very brief list I created of lobby firms and their clients to boycott which I created from this source. http://www.atr.org/kstreet/ The K street lobby industry and all the clients they use to manipulate our laws should be boycotted.

As I see it see it a firm should still be boycotted even if they give to the Dems if they give to Republicans as well. ___________________________________________________

The K Street Project is a report tracing the political affiliation, employment background and political donations of members of Washington's premier lobbying firms, trade associations and high-tech companies.

The report* compiles Federal Election Commissions filings for each individual's political contributions to candidates, parties and political action committees which are overwhelmingly partisan.

ATR currently compiles the K-Street Project for Trade Associations, Law/Lobbying Firms and Corporations. Click on the links below to access industry-specific data.

58. This adds a dimension to the boycott
that wasn't there before and I'm not really interested in "going there." Many of the lobbyists are for progressive causes, Democrats, and others that don't particularly raise my hackles very much. I happen to support a few good PACs and lobbyists mayself. It all depends on what they are lobbying for. But I'll have to leave that to others to decide. I will not, myself, engage in any boycott that results from this list, which is also outdated.

It is difficult enough just verifying contributions to repugs, without branching out to lobbying and companies that give less than 50% to repugs. If you want this boycott to fail, just make it so onerous that no one can participate in it.

I just don't want to get into that realm. You can start another group that works in the lobbying arena. I just don't see how we have the time and energy to expand this group into that area. It's a good issue, but please not here. If you go through the posts here you will see that I have already made some errors in my research on contributions, based on incorrect data from some websites.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 09:34 AM by kayell
*sigh* about Publix (major southern grocery chain) but they are one of the biggest grocery political contributors and 97% listed going for republicans.

Off to do more adjusting of my shopping. I'm spending time looking at my whole diet and how I can make adjustments - this looks to be the most major area I can change since it is my largest expense after housing and utilities. For those with similar interests, here is most of my strategy http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=255x161
The rest mostly consists of choosing less environmentally damaging foodstuffs, ie eating as close to basic, unprocessed food stuffs as possible, plant foods almost entirely (must return to veganism), and eating organic or responsibly IPM farmed foods.

Added: Link to major food store political contributors:

I know how to do screen-shots, but not how to get them posted here. What I think I will do is just go through and get the screen shots of all the pertinent industries, if someone can help me get them posted here.

64. Wait A Minute!!!!!!!!
There has to be some structure to this, I see many companies on these list who actually give more to Dems than to Repugs! ie. Viacom

Let's make a simple rule:

1. ONLY post a company who donatea >= 55% to the Repugs

That way we are not defeating the purpose of our list.

Mary.

Check out this article on Viacom. Does not this article describe why the Republicans call us Dems flip floppers? He gives all his money to Dems then says "but from a Viacom standpoint, the election of a Republican administration is a better deal. Because the Republican administration has stood for many things we believe in,..."

Top Executives at Viacom, Parent of CBS, Support Kerry
By Robert B. Bluey
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
September 24, 2004

http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewNation.asp?Page=%5CNation%5Carchive%5C200409%5CNAT20040924a.html

(CNSNews.com) - Two top executives at media giant Viacom, which owns CBS, have given money to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign and are supporting other liberal Democrats this year.

Sumner Redstone, the 81-year-old chairman and chief executive of Viacom, and one of his top lieutenants, Tom Freston, the corporation's co-president, have each given Kerry the maximum $2,000 donation allowed under the law.

"I don't want to denigrate Kerry," Redstone said, "but from a Viacom standpoint, the election of a Republican administration is a better deal. Because the Republican administration has stood for many things we believe in, deregulation and so on. The Democrats are not bad people. ... But from a Viacom standpoint, we believe the election of a Republican administration is better for our company."

71. That's a valid point
I was just looking at the financial criteria. To be candid, I don't think I personally base a boycott on one person's statement regarding which way he was going to vote.

That said, you do bring up a very good point. I think it would be a good idea to include companies that do not have dem friendly policies, ie. toward the environment, employees, unions etc. etc.

Perhaps we can work out a list of what these criteria should be. I have already sorted the companies into a group (just based on their financial contributions ie. those who donated between 55-100% of their financial contributions to the Repug's regardless of the size of the amount). I also think listing their products and suggested alternatives is a good idea.

I will get cracking on a database.

For the moment here is the top 20:

Rank Company Amount Percent
1 Tasty Baking Company $16,075 100.00%
2 Wellman, Inc. $10,000 100.00%
3 California Water Service Group $7,700 100.00%
4 Haemonetics Corporation $2,700 100.00%
5 Waypoint Financial Corp. $2,600 100.00%
6 American Bank Inc $1,100 100.00%
7 Star Scientific, Inc. $500 100.00%
8 Valhi, Inc. $300 100.00%
9 Woodward Governor Company $100 100.00%
10 Cooper Industries, Ltd. $803,194 99.78%
11 Dana Corporation $53,865 99.75%
12 Marshall & Ilsley Corporation $39,858 99.65%
13 UNOVA, Inc. $61,501 99.56%
14 Overnite Corporation $128,508 99.51%
15 Carpenter Technology Corporation $38,740 99.33%
16 Ameritrade Holding Corporation $6,953 99.33%
17 Frontier Oil Corporation $24,813 99.25%
18 Lifecore Biomedical, Inc. $4,910 98.85%

72. Please, let's just leave it at financial considerations
When all is more organized, we can add comments and links to adverse actions on the part of the company involved. We will be here a year from now with nothing to show if we add more criteria now.

BAD: any company that gives more than 55% to the thugs.

It's so simple and doable. Why make it hard. This way I can just write to the company and say "according www.opensecrets.org you contributed xxx% of money to rethugs and I'm not buying your product." Period, ended. No problem, no mistakes.

74. Fruit of the Loom
They're a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary and I have no clue what thier political donations are like. I just know that they are suing a work-at-home mom who sews cloth diapers. Why? Apparently they feel that Wonderoos (her brand name- Wonder for Wonderful and Roos because they have a pocket) is too close to Underoos (thier children's underpants)dispite the fact that the products do not compete and her item is marketed via the internet while thiers is in brick and mortar stores. Not only do they want her to change her product's name, they also want a portion of her earnings for the entire time she's used that name. As a small business (really small, it's just her as far as I know) she can't afford the 50K or so it would take to fight them, even though the law is on her side.

So if you need some single-sized pocket style cloth diapers, talk to Jessica at wonderoos.com and if you need some underpants steer clear of Fruit of the Loom, okay? Thanks! :)

85. Here is my post on the easiest way to do stuff....
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=255x464#551

Find a business you want to add (something near you maybe. It can be Dem or Repub, we just want to know about them so we can rate them...). (Near you, we have Basha's and I think, a liquor store, but not much else)

Go to the Progressive Pages link to enter information in the proper area. Sapphocrat checks everything over before she adds it, so if it's in the wrong place, don't worry. She'll correct it.

http://www.globalblogs.com/progressivepages/index.html

Just keep entering places you know about or hear about that are extra good or extra bad. We always need more clothing stores, grocery stores, local merchants like plumbers, electrical, and so on...and restaurants... (hint here: do you know where the candidates' followers were allowed to have their local meetups? That's a happy face and a star for the management. Look for stuff like that. Or try to remember any candidates' signs out front.

Or do a fundrace.org lookup for your zipcode and some of those near you (http://www.fundrace.org/neighbors.php). All these will help us cover Arizona. We don't have much there yet.

Thanks Az!

87. I've been looking at Demopedia and IMO
it's not as well suited to our task here as the Progressive Pages are. Demopedia is really more suitable to encyclopedia style entries, research for articles, etc. It's so very freeform that our information would get mixed in with others. Also it requires that people write articles rather than simply enter the information in the limited fields.

Have you had a chance to look at the Progressive Pages? It's really great, very well suited to our purposes. It's almost like a phone book format.. After an entry is made, people can rate the companies and there's a red/blue meter graphic that shows up. I don't think we should move the data over to Demopedia, because I think our information would get lost in the more general information and other political types of research over there. That's just my two cents... :)

88. Please see crispini's post.
The Progressive Pages is solely a buying guide, and Demopedia is more of an encyclopedia.

Some of the larger businesses (such as Clear Channel) will be included, I'm sure, but PP includes ALL types of businesses, large AND small, and rates them according to their sympathies.

We have been working on this for over a month or two, and we really want to keep our original focus and data going. I don't simply want to be swallowed up by Demopedia. Although our goals are similar, they are not the same.

91. My website's boycott list
I recently added a boycott list to the website I run. It lists companies both good and bad and is categorized by industry for easier reference. It can be found here: http://www.newsmutiny.com/18/boycott_list.htm

another good page I've seen is Starve the Beast:

103. 7-Eleven does sell Citgo gas...
I wouldn't call them bad. Certainly better getting gas there than at Shell Oil, which is split between Choosetheblue.org and buyblue.org on whether they are red or blue. Hess on the east coast is also a good blue gasoline company too that is missing here.

102. Staples DID pull their ads from Sinclair stations in protest...
After the Sinclair folks were trying to push the Swift-boat style docs on us around election timeframe and the Nightline reading of the fallen soldiers' names mess too.

So whether or not they have Rethug donors, they still did the right thing when it came to that action. So I'm neutral on that. If you do shop there, make sure you let someone know that the reason why you did was because of their choice to do the right thing there. Hopefully if enough of us communicate that sort of message, they'll do more of that sort of thing in the future.

They support organizations that oppose reproductive rights. Edited to add: I worked at a major women's organization, and while we were not allowed to publicize any sort of list, we had sources that told us about these two corporations.
