"Emotional Intelligence"
Has anyone read this book by Daniel Goleman? I'm interested in finding opportunities for my 7 year old to interact with other kids in a self-science supportive environment.

Any thoughts?

1. any good museums near you?
here in chicago, we have an embarrassment of riches in this department. most of them offer saturday classes or summer programs.
also, universities with education departments usually have great saturday or summer programs. they are usually for "gifted" kids, but the ones that i dealt with were flexible with homeschoolers. they appreciated the strengths that these kids bring.

2. I've not read the book, but it sounds very good. I think it's important

and we plan to recognize EQ as part of our "curriculum" this year. For example, I am planning lessons around the "Quaker" life long learning skills as listed here:

http://www.fsmn.org/about_lifelong.html

We plan to focus on two "life skills" per month, and I think we'll expand/continue next year. Our first lesson will be on persistence. I simply searched our local library and looked for easy books on persistence and plan to find many opportunities to discuss this in the coming weeks. I also plan to engage my daughter in Home-school play groups Girl Scouts etc. to involve her with others as much as possible. She has cousins who home-school so we try to gather regularly with them as well.

I found some great links when googling for teaching kids emotional intelligence also:

http://www.google.com.ar/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=RNWE,RNWE:2004-45,RNWE:en&q=teaching+kids+emotional+intelligence

Best wishes, let us know if you find anything interesting. I'm not sure if my post was at all helpful, but I do appreciate your bringing this subject up - :)

3. Thanks for the life long learning skills URL...
I'm going to read it with Timmy tomorrow. I think it will help him understand that school is much more than learning a bunch of facts.

4. I read it awhile back...
after attending a seminar on the book that was offered through our school system. The woman who presented actually studied & worked with Goleman while she was working on her doctorate. The book is incredible.
