Anyone seen the Gears of War ad with the song Mad World?
I think that's one of the best game ads I've seen - it really grabs your attention - such a gentle song but the lyrics fit the plot of the game very well. The ad company that came up with that did a good job. If you haven't seen it, go to youtube and search for "gears of War mad world"

Also, I just wanted to get a Gears of War thread up prior to the release!

1. Is it the cover of "Mad World" from DONNIE DARKO
by Gary Jules?

2. Indeed it is and it fits perfectly
It almost makes you want to cry it syncs so well. I thought it was Micheal Stipes at first, but it is Gary Jules. Violence and sadness...

4. It was a good idea, and a good concept, but I don't think it fit perfectly.
I would have liked to have just a teeny bit of the sound from the game edited in. Even if just the monster at the end roaring, or the guy breathing so it didn't seem just like music slapped over a game cutscene.

As it is, that song is so good and emotional that you could put it over almost any footage and it would work.

If you've seen how it's used in Donnie Darko, it's just perfect.

3. I want to see more game ads like this
Show the story. Make the player feel that this is something more than mindless violence. Us big boys and girls love gaming not because of the button mashing, but because of the stories, the characters, and the game play.

Brings back memories of Fallout 2's usage of "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" with nuclear explosions in the background as well as their campy pip boy cartoons.

6. oh god! pip boy! memories!
could've toned back on the action some, but otherwise a very inspired mash-up. a good commercial. wonder if it will sell to the casual gamer hopped up on wargasms.

7. Fallout 3 is coming, so be happy!
Bethesda softworks (proof that PC RPG gaming can kick azz) are working on it!

10. According to some of the reviews, the story is the weakest part of it.

11. Many Of The Reviews Don't Trash The Story Itself,...
rather they trash the fact that the game doesn't tell much of it. I don't get this critique. I've known the story for quite some time now from Epics own viral marketing and from reading articles about GOW at some of the very same sites that are trashing the game for, well, ...it's lack of story. Go figure. I guess they needed something to nit-pick. Oh and a little hint for these reviewers; if you let the game sit at the title-screen for a while, yo will be treated to a little GOW video that tells much of the pre-story. I have GOW sitting in my entertainment center but I'm not going to play it until I get, at least some, of the hearing back in my right ear. The wait is killing me.

5. The game itself?
Holy crap. this is what next generation is supposed to feel like. I feel like I'm watching a movie but participating in it at the same time. it's astounding. First game that makes me wish someone would drop off an HDTV on my doorstep for being a good democrat, too!

8. I think it's a cutscene
but with GPUs getting better and better, who knows what the future will hold?

By the way, there are some VERY interesting (some would say, earth-shattering) developments in raytracing technology in prototype right now. Expect to see cinema-quality raytraced graphics in games three to five years hence.

Scientific American did an article on it this past August, titled "A Great Leap in Graphics". I'd link to it, but it's subscription only.

9. Ad big a step as polygon graphics?
Four years ago, though, I couldn't tell some screen shots of next-gen racing games from photos of the real race tracks. As game graphics improve, so does the perceptiveness of the players.

14. Aw Man, I Remember The First Time...
I fired up "Doom" an it was "this is it, the Holy Grail of gaming graphics". I played the first level of it again a couple of weeks ago and I was like "...ummm, what the hell am I looking at again? Funny how our perspective changes as these geniuses keep wowing us.
