What was your favorite game that is no longer made?
Mine was Elite Frontier. I loved that game.

1. Elite!!!!!
:bounce:

Man, I LOVED Elite!

And Frontier was amazing! The first game I bought when I got my new (showing my age) Amiga 1200.

Played Freelancer a few years ago. Not bad, very Elite-esque, but not the greatest game.

2. I still look up info on it...
apparently the original designers of the game had a falling out. One wants to remake the game and the other is a complete boob and won't give up the rights to it. So it stays in "one of the greatest games of all time" limbo. :(

4. Yeah... I miss a lot of the classic LucasArts Adventure games.
Sam and Max... (BTW, there's an episodic sequel being released by a new developer... LA has no involvement)... Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis... the list goes on.

NOTHING TO DO WITH STAR WARS but still extremely popular with many gamers.

Unfortunately LA knows an easy buck...

well as playing Maniac Mansion for the first time, and replaying Sam 'n' Max.

What a great game Day of the Tentacle is!

8. Descent Free Space
Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 09:09 AM by Sin
Great space fighting sim with awesome sci fi story line in it. They only made 2:( and they left the second one open ended just like first even more so I think. then i think the company sold it off or just didn't make any more and to this day I still wonder what would happen in the 3rd

If you haven't played and have a flight stick laying about give them a whirl there really good.then you will be in the same boat as me unfortunately :(

12. Yea there quite good
The Story line is like a mixture of Wing commander The short lived Series "Space Above and beyond"
and id even say stargate thoe the games out date the Series.Your going to love the capital ship battles in 2 they are just plain crazy nothing like seeing flack burst all around you impacting off your shields as you divert power from the rear ones Then Suddenly the wing man to the right of you gets hit by a ion beam head on and whats left of his hull breaks through shields and cripples your ship. Ahhh now I feel like installing it again :)

9. I haven't heard of another Mechwarrior game yet
I really liked those.

I don't really have a 'favorite' game, though... though I suppose maybe when Bethesda stops making Elder Scrolls games I'll have cause for some serious complaints.

I loved the Myst series, I think it has lots of life left, but they've ended the line. I have all six of those...

speaking of which, why is "End of Ages" titled as "Myst V"? It's the sixth game.

Heh.

Dungeon Keeper. I want another one of those, using the Source engine.

There are just so many. Not to derail, but this is one of the reasons I'm so against copyright law as it pertains to abandonware; there are many games out now that can be modded to hell and back and completely alter the look and feel of the game to the point that it's a completely different game. Gamers could bring updates to the favorite old games, and likely would do so but for copyright.

Anyhow.

I don't understand how Looking Glass Studios bought the farm. Thief was terrific and helped redefine the FPS genre.

It is also a crime that there has never been a System Shock 3. :sniff:

41. Absolutely ...
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 01:58 AM by RoyGBiv
I played the original, then hacked the original, then wrote an detailed document instructing others how to do so. It was a well-distributed document for the time, but I haven't been able to find it lately. Anyway, by "hacked" I don't mean "cracked." I mean, literally, "hacked." The game was configurable in a sense. You just had to understand the player save files and how they stored information. It had a lot of easter eggs in it as I recall, things that either weren't easy to find or things that you wouldn't notice unless you were specifically looking for them.

One of the greatest things about the game, I thought, was the mapping and how that fit into solving some of the quests. The original box gave you grid-based mapping paper, and the instructions told you that mapping was a good idea. Turned out that to solve the final puzzle, you either had to map or guess well because the "password" was spelled out if you did the map.

I loved that game, on so many levels.

I played one of the "Heroes" versions recently, and it just wasn't the same.

24. I LOVED the LAND version of that game. What a great early game.
Formations. High ground terrain advantage. Supply lines. Good times!

I seem to recall that if you were winning a campaign, it gave you the option to accept the opponent's surrender or "crush him". I never seemed to be able to resist the temptation to "crush".

Uncharted Waters

34. Psst...
Check out Supreme Commander

The navigation is a little wonky on that site, and you need the Flash player installed.

It's made by Chris Taylor (creator of TA), and from what I've seen, it IS Total Annihilation 2.
Someone else still holds the "Total Annihilation" name, but Supreme Commander looks fantastic.
